Dental cleaning: When and why is it necessary?

A lot of plaque builds up on our teeth during meals, which can eventually lead to the formation of tartar. Insufficient or poor oral hygiene will only make the problem worse. However, the formation of tartar is a completely natural process, as everyone eats, and no one can remove all plaque from the tooth enamel. Regular and thorough brushing is not always enough, which is why tartar removal may become necessary.
How Does Plaque Turn into Tartar?
When we talk about tartar, we first need to consider plaque. The bacteria in plaque dissolve minerals found in saliva, such as phosphate and calcium. In this process, the plaque hardens, turns into tartar, and binds tightly to the surface of teeth or crowns. This cannot be removed with regular brushing or home remedies. The only solution is tartar removal through professional dental cleaning.
It is important to know that tartar, unlike tooth decay, does not only form on natural teeth but also on dental prostheses, which happens in most cases. Plaque that is not removed can be problematic for everyone—especially for those prone to gum disease.
Gum disease can also often be hereditary. Additionally, it can be a problem for pregnant women, people with diabetes, and smokers. Many, for example, are unaware that a condition commonly associated with diabetes is the development of gum disease. Without regular dental check-ups, there is a risk of tooth loss.

Dental Cleaning
One of the worst consequences of tartar that is not removed is that over time it irritates the teeth and the protective layer of the gums. Gingivitis usually occurs due to the toxins released by the bacteria in the tartar, causing the gums to appear purple or bluish-red. The most important point, however, is not to give up on regular oral hygiene, because the discomfort is not caused by brushing itself, but rather by brushing that is not thorough or sufficient.
Patients often report that they did not notice any symptoms of gingivitis and therefore did not seek professional help. It is not always possible to detect the symptoms at home, which is why regular dental check-ups are recommended so that gingivitis can be identified early. The advantage of this is that it can then also be treated in time.
What Can Happen If We Don’t Remove Tartar?
At our dental clinic in Budapest, we offer tartar removal as part of our dental care. Ultrasonic treatment is a highly effective method. Dentists perform it as part of routine care, knowing that it helps prevent dental problems. They also provide advice on maintaining good oral hygiene to help you avoid issues in the future.
If you neglect to have your tartar removed, it can have serious consequences. For example, the growing layer of tartar that irritates the gums can attack the tissue supporting the teeth, eventually causing irreversible damage to the enamel. This condition is called periodontitis, which is one of the most common causes of tooth loss in adulthood. At this stage, thorough intervention is required, and a periodontitis specialist must be involved to save the teeth.
It is important that tartar on the teeth is only removed under professional conditions using specialized equipment. The treatment consists of two parts: first polishing, and then tartar removal, so it is a good idea to be prepared for a thorough procedure.
