Bone Grafting in Budapest

Bone grafting is an essential treatment for patients who would like to receive dental implants but have experienced significant jawbone loss. The jawbone can gradually deteriorate due to missing teeth, gum disease or trauma, making it difficult to place dental implants without first rebuilding the bone.

Thousands of Happy Patients. 30+ Years of Experience.

Using advanced dental techniques and high-quality bone grafting materials, we can rebuild a strong and healthy jawbone. If you’re considering dental implants but are unsure whether you have sufficient bone, book a consultation at Andersen Dental Clinic. We’ll assess your jawbone and discuss the most suitable treatment options for you.

What is bone grafting?

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure used to rebuild and strengthen the jawbone when there is not enough bone to support dental implants. In most cases, this is achieved using high-quality bone grafting materials, although in certain situations, the patient’s own bone may also be used.

In the majority of cases, we can place the dental implant at the same time as the bone grafting procedure. However, if there is insufficient healthy bone to securely support the implant, the bone graft may need to be carried out first, allowing the area to heal before the implant is placed.

At Andersen Dental Clinic, we offer several bone grafting techniques. The most suitable approach depends on factors such as your overall oral health, the condition of your jawbone and the extent of bone loss. Before recommending treatment, our experienced dentists carry out a comprehensive examination, including digital X-rays and a 3D CBCT scan, to determine the most appropriate solution for your individual needs.

Causes of jawbone loss

Jawbone loss can occur for several reasons, including:

  • Missing Teeth: When a tooth is lost, the jawbone no longer receives the natural stimulation provided by the tooth root. Over time, the bone begins to shrink and lose volume. If a missing tooth is not replaced promptly, bone grafting may be required to rebuild the jaw before dental implants can be placed.

  • Gum Disease (Periodontitis): Advanced gum disease can gradually destroy the bone supporting the teeth, leading to both tooth loss and significant bone loss. At Andersen Dental Clinic, we have extensive experience in treating periodontal disease. Learn more about gum disease treatment.

  • Trauma or Injury: Accidents, facial injuries or other forms of trauma can damage the jawbone and result in bone loss. In these cases, bone grafting may be necessary to restore the jaw and prepare it for future dental treatment.

  • Congenital Conditions: Some patients are born with an underdeveloped jawbone, which can make dental implant treatment more challenging. Bone grafting can often provide the support needed for successful implant placement.

  • Previous Oral Surgery: Certain surgical procedures, such as the removal of cysts or other oral conditions, can leave areas of reduced bone volume. Bone grafting may be recommended to rebuild the jaw before further restorative treatment, including dental implants.

How is the jawbone rebuilt?

There are several bone grafting techniques available, and the most suitable option depends on your individual needs and the condition of your jawbone. Before recommending treatment, our dentists carry out a thorough examination to determine the best approach for achieving a stable, long-lasting result.

Bone grafting materials

In most cases, we use high-quality bone grafting materials, which are biocompatible graft materials derived from bovine bone. These materials act as a scaffold that encourages your body’s natural bone to regenerate, helping to rebuild the jaw and provide a solid foundation for dental implants.

Autogenous bone grafting

In some cases, your own bone may be used to rebuild the jaw. The bone is typically taken from another area of the lower jaw and transplanted to the site where additional bone is needed. Because the graft comes from your own body, it offers excellent healing and integration.

Sinus Lift

If you require dental implants in the upper back jaw, a sinus lift may be necessary. During this procedure, the sinus membrane is gently lifted, and the space beneath it is filled with bone grafting material to create enough bone volume for secure implant placement.

A sinus lift is a well-established and highly successful procedure. At Andersen Dental Clinic, our experienced dentists perform sinus lift surgery regularly, ensuring you receive safe, predictable treatment and the best possible outcome.

How is bone grafting performed?

Bone grafting is carried out in several stages to ensure the best possible outcome:

  1. Initial Consultation: Your dentist will assess the condition of your jawbone using digital X-rays and a 3D CBCT scan. This allows us to determine the extent of any bone loss and recommend the most appropriate treatment approach.

  2. Local anaesthetic: The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout. In certain cases, sedation or general anaesthesia may be considered, depending on the complexity of the treatment and your individual needs.

  3. Placement of the bone graft: The required amount of bone grafting material is carefully placed in the area where additional bone support is needed. In the vast majority of cases, the dental implants can be placed during the same procedure, reducing the overall treatment time.

  4. Closing the surgical site: Once the graft has been positioned, the gum is closed with sutures. Depending on the type used, the stitches will either dissolve naturally or be removed during a follow-up appointment.

  5. Healing and bone integration: The bone graft then requires time to heal and integrate with your natural jawbone. This process typically takes between four and six months, depending on the extent of the procedure. During this time, new bone forms around the graft and any dental implants that have been placed, creating a strong and stable foundation for your long-term restoration.

Recovery and aftercare

Following bone grafting, it is important to follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and achieve the best possible outcome.

At Andersen Dental Clinic, we provide every patient with detailed guidance on how to care for the treated area and support a smooth recovery. This includes:

  • Avoid smoking, as it can significantly slow down bone healing and increase the risk of complications.

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity for the first few days after the procedure.

  • Eat soft foods and avoid chewing on the treated side until advised otherwise, allowing the bone graft to heal without unnecessary pressure.

  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene to reduce the risk of infection and promote healthy healing.

In the vast majority of cases, the dental implants can be placed at the same time as the bone grafting procedure. This approach reduces the overall treatment time and means fewer surgical procedures for the patient.

If there is insufficient healthy bone to securely support the implants, however, the bone graft will need to be carried out as a separate procedure. In these cases, the jawbone typically requires around six months to heal before the implants can be placed. Once the implants have been inserted, a further healing period of three to six months is usually needed before the final dental crowns can be permanently fitted.

When the bone graft and implant placement are performed during the same procedure, the healing period is generally between four and six months before the permanent crowns can be attached.

Benefits of bone grafting

  • Makes dental implants possible: One of the main benefits of bone grafting is that it creates a strong and stable foundation for dental implants. When the jawbone has deteriorated due to tooth loss, gum disease or injury, there may not be enough bone to support an implant. Bone grafting rebuilds the lost bone, making implant treatment possible.

  • Improves chewing function: A lack of healthy jawbone can affect your ability to chew comfortably and, in some cases, even your speech. By rebuilding the jawbone, bone grafting provides the support needed for dental implants and replacement teeth, helping you eat, speak and smile with confidence.

  • Preserves your facial structure: The jawbone plays an important role in supporting the muscles and soft tissues of the face. When bone is lost, the face can begin to appear sunken, giving an older-looking appearance. Bone grafting helps preserve the natural contours of your face and supports a healthier, more youthful facial profile.

  • Helps prevent further bone loss: Without stimulation from natural tooth roots or dental implants, the jawbone continues to shrink over time. Bone grafting encourages new bone growth and helps maintain healthy bone volume, reducing the risk of further bone loss and supporting your long-term oral health.

How much does bone grafting cost?

The cost of bone grafting depends on the amount of bone grafting material required and the complexity of your treatment. This can only be determined following a comprehensive examination, including a 3D CBCT scan, which allows our dentists to accurately assess the condition of your jawbone and plan your treatment.

At Andersen Dental Clinic, we provide high-quality bone grafting treatment at competitive prices, helping patients save up to 70% compared to private UK prices—without compromising on quality or safety.
