Do you know what healthy gums look like? Many people do everything they can to maintain and preserve their teeth: they brush thoroughly with the correct technique twice a day and make sure to remove any food particles between their teeth. Yet, many still don’t know how to tell if they are doing it correctly.

How can you tell if there is a problem? What signs should you watch for? Why is inflamed gums an issue? In this blog post, we will answer these questions.

Here’s How You Can Tell if Your Gums Are Healthy!

When you look closely, you will notice that it is pink, not reddish, with a subtle, gentle hue. It is not swollen, nor receding; it fits snugly around the teeth and has the characteristic scalloped edge. Another important sign of healthy gums is that they do not bleed!

If you regularly have tartar removed, either through traditional treatment or ultrasonic cleaning, you are likely aware that it has a significant impact on gum health, as it prevents inflammation caused by accumulated tartar. Prolonged inflammation can cause the gums to recede and become loose.

How Can You Prevent Gum Disease?

To prevent gum disease, it is important to have professional dental cleanings every six months and to attend regular dental check-ups.

Gingivitis: The Enemy of Healthy Teeth

It is important not to underestimate the significance of healthy gums, as even strong teeth can be at risk if the gums are inflamed. Many have heard stories, or perhaps know someone who has experienced having dental implants placed because their gums had receded. While a dental replacement can be attractive and functional, our goal is always to preserve our natural teeth for as long as possible.

If your gums bleed or are inflamed, you should take it seriously. At this stage, there are still many treatment options available, but if the gums begin to recede, more complex procedures may be required.

The problem with gingivitis is that it develops gradually.

Gingivitis often does not present with obvious symptoms. The gums may not appear noticeably swollen, and it may not necessarily hurt, but they can bleed occasionally. Many people assume it’s simply caused by minor brushing trauma, but at this stage, tartar has often already formed, and the gums are inflamed.

It is especially problematic when hard tartar forms below the gum line, where it cannot be seen with the naked eye. This is why regular tartar removal is so important. A dental hygienist will thoroughly examine your entire mouth and remove all deposits, including those you may not even notice.

How Can You Recognize Gingivitis?

When the gums are inflamed, they do not feel firm but rather softer. They take on a reddish color, which can be difficult to notice in the back areas of the mouth. Bleeding, however, is also very common and is something most people notice.

What Can You Do to Maintain Healthy Gums?

Fortunately, many problems can be prevented, and you can actively support your gum health by eating a healthy diet and taking vitamins. This is also important because nutritional deficiencies are often a cause of gum-related symptoms.

Our habits and lifestyle play a major role. What we eat, whether we smoke or not, and whether we are stressed all have an impact. Even nighttime teeth grinding can lead to gum inflammation, and unfortunately, it can also damage the enamel.

Strive to find balance in all areas of your life and include stress-reducing activities in your daily routine. Of course, we must not underestimate the importance of proper dental care.
